Wood Fence Installation: What NYC Homeowners Should Know

A practical guide to wood fence installation in New York City: choosing wood, setting posts, property lines, and maintenance for a fence that lasts.

Wood Fence Installation: What NYC Homeowners Should Know

A wood fence adds privacy, security, and curb appeal to your New York City property. Done right, it lasts decades. Done poorly, it warps, leans, and rots within a few years. Here's what matters most.

Start with property lines. Before any post goes in the ground, confirm your lot boundaries. A survey or your property deed will save you from costly disputes with neighbors later.

Post depth is everything. In the NYC area, frost lines reach 36 to 42 inches, so posts must be set below frost to prevent heaving. We set posts in concrete at the proper depth and slope the concrete away from the wood to shed water.

Choose the right wood. Cedar and pressure-treated pine are the most common choices for NYC fences. Cedar resists rot and insects naturally and weathers to a soft gray. Pressure-treated pine is more budget-friendly and, with proper sealing, performs well for years.

Seal and stain early. A good water-repellent sealer applied within the first few weeks, and refreshed every 2 to 3 years, keeps moisture out and dramatically extends the life of your fence.
